Hawthorn Class

 Class Teacher : Mrs Bott

Terms Three and Four

Our enquiry is: What could it be made of?

This term, the children will be exploring the big question: “What could it be made of?”

To help us investigate this, we will work through a series of mini-enquiries:

  • What is my toy made of?
  • What is the difference between my toys and my grandparents’ toys?
  • What do I need to keep my teddy warm and dry?
  • What is a designer?
  • What would you design?

Through stories, class discussions, and shared experiences, children will explore the concepts of comparison, purpose, identification, pattern, fairness, cause and effect, strength, phenomena, evolution, inheritance and impact.

Phonics

We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. This term, the reception children will continue learning their set 1 sounds and special friends. They will become more confident with blending sounds together to read words. They will continue to practise writing letters and words.

Year 1 children will be learning sets 2 and 3 sounds and building their skills by reading and writing words containing these sounds. We encourage children to apply their phonics skills across all areas of learning.

Families can support at home by engaging with the Virtual Classroom films wherever possible.

English

We will be doing daily reading and writing lessons based upon a new story each week. These are: Aliens love underpants, The giant jam sandwich, Crocodile, The three little pigs, The gingerbread man, Room on the broom.  These lessons will explore new vocabulary, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities for children to learn how to form letters correctly and how to write a sentence. We will explore lots of other stories within our daily story time sessions.

Maths

Across the term, the children will develop themselves as mathematicians. Reception children will be taught the following units: Introducing zero, Comparison and Compare mass and capacity. Year 1 children will work on the units: counting within 100, measures – capacity, length and weight and Additive structures and facts within 10. The children will explore counting songs every day.  The children will also have a daily 10-minute ‘Mastering Number’ maths session. They will be given lots of opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through the provision.
