Term 1 and 2

Our enquiry is: Why do people invade and settle? 

In terms one and two, the children will be exploring the big question: “Why do people invade and settle?” 

To help us investigate this, we will learn about the Romans and the Vikings, by working through a series of mini-enquiries:

• Who were the Romans?
• How did Britain resist?
• Where can we still see the impact?
• What else was happening?
• Who were the Vikings?
• Why did they invade?
• How did Britain resist?
• What impact did they have?

Through videos, research, class discussions, shared experiences and an exciting trip to Caerleon Roman fortress and baths, children will have the opportunity to reflect on these questions and develop their understanding.

English 

We will be doing daily reading lessons based on 'The Riddle of the Runes' by Janina Ramirez and daily writing lessons based on 'Saving the Butterfly' by Helen Cooper. These lessons will explore literary techniques, grammar, comprehension skills and provide opportunities to create fiction and non-fiction writing. The class will also be enjoying story time at the end of each day. 

Maths

Across the term, the children will develop themselves as mathematicians across a range of mathematical concepts.

Year 4: Addition and subtraction, numbers up to ten thousand, perimeter, 4x, 3x, 6x, 9x tables and 5x, 7x tables patterns.

Year 5: Decimal fractions, money, negative numbers, short division and multiplication and area and scaling.

Year 6: Arithmetic, calculating using known structures, multiples of a thousand, numbers up to ten million, order of operations and mean averages.

R.E

In R.E we will be answering the question ‘Are all religions equal?'. We will be learning about connections between world views, different ways religious world views think of 'God' and why and how different religious world-views can live in harmony. 

PSHE

This term’s unit is 'Connecting with others: How can we respect each other?'. We will be exploring how to show respect to ourselves and others by learning how to build friendships, resolve conflict and respond to bullying. 

PE

Our P.E.days are Monday and Wednesday.

Children should come to school in their PE kits on those days. 

Home learning

For home learning, children should be doing the following every week: 

• Reading as often as possible – 5 times a week

• Practising times-tables on TT Rockstars

• Spelling Shed – games to play linked to this week’s spelling rule

Children have logins for the websites above in their reading records. Please let Mrs Camper or Mrs Bakary know if your child needs another copy of their log-in details. 

Year 6 -Your child will be given a SATS Reading and Maths Workbook to complete weekly.
